Last night I went to Manderley To lose my mind inside a storm I always choose a bitter story Praising Greene and reading Maugham And I knew that it was reckless Running off the way I did Always chasing big ideas, I was The ever optimistic kid You’ve got to pay a price you know For feeling so damn good But today I am a conqueror I see the world from way up high And my dreams are dancing for me Like swallows across the sky But You call the battle vulgar That game they play with ease You never did like that hustle no The awful clamour just to be seen So tell it like a story friend Until you make it make some sense Coz life is like a carnival A race to pay the rent Your far to sensitive my boy
And I know you care too much Your life is like an unsung song A chorus begging to be heard But if you don’t dare to raise your voice We’ll never catch a word And if you don’t dare raise your voice We’ll never catch a word So I laid my life before me From books and pretty films I’m a sucker for the romance The anticipation and the thrills All while my gall was wreaking havoc Around the weakness of my will And the school of dedication Was left praying for its fill So I got my shit together man Planted seeds in fertile ground And I told it like a story friend Until I made it make some sense And life once like a carnival Now chance for transcendence Oh life I’ve had my carnival Now take my sweet lament

Flying down the hillside As giddy as a child in that cold Lombardy haze In the blissful early hours Your bike caught in the tram line You fell and cut your knees And you were so damn proud about it Smiling silently And just like the kids in those quick movies We did what lovers ought to do Oh girl talking wild and talking sweet Kiss me on every corner of your street You get awful grumpy When your blood sugars are low So I stuffed your face with gummy bears Stepped back and watched you blow A brazen celebration In love you see so clear And it’s love that keeps us dreaming babe And it’s love that keeps us here You do something to me You make me so damn sure Of what it is I should be doing babe And what the hell I’m doing it for And just like the kids in those quick movies We did what lovers ought to do Oh girl talking wild and talking sweet Kiss me on every corner of your street Who is it that I love more than anything Who is it that I love more Who is it that I love more than anything Who is it that I love more Shout it off the rooftops I’m taking to the town Coz I’m crazy about you darling And I’ll never let you down My fearless little doctor My only confidant I’ll sign my name in adoration You’re the only one I want Who is it that I love more than anything Who is it that I love more Who is it that I love more than anything Who is it that I love more Shout it off the rooftops I’m taking to the streets Coz I’m crazy about you baby Even though you’re 5 ft 3 Your do something to me You make my so damn sure Of what it is I should be doing babe And what the hell I’m doing it for And just like the kids in those quick movies We did what lovers ought to do Oh girl talking wild and talking sweet Kiss me on every corner of your street

Climbing stairs in the midday heat To Gianicolo past the cannon police They’ll set one off Salute to roman loss I guess the locals couldn’t give a toss They couldn’t give a toss The dreamer will withdraw themselves And when it won’t work, blame somebody else Coz they just can’t see What only they can see What only dreamer’s see We’ll hit the party in our Sunday best You in your summer dress Taking away their breath Not like they’ve got much left Nobody knows in fact your head’s a mess Yeah your head’s a mess I know you hate it when you waste your time Lets leave right now we’ll catch the evening sun God damn this day ain’t done I’m just getting started son We’ll soak up Rome like medicine And he’s a charming son of a bitch Eyes like summer Words like letters And once his thrill wears off And that adventure’s lost He leaves the table powerless He leaves the table powerless My dear friends would you like the truth No one really gives a damn what you do And I mean that in the most wonderful way On this liberated day Now don’t you tell me that there’s something in your way Now don’t you tell me that there’s something in your way

6000 feet It’s a heck of a climb in the heat And I was wet through from the morning rain Climbing this hill till the blue sky came Way up here There’s a view of the lake and the peer I can see the light washed stone hotels Ringing out loud on the old church bells I was in a high place making plans
I was falling love, with every stranger Talking up a storm in a beat up town Yeah I thought that I was, Leonard Cohen I thought that I was Leonard Cohen I feel fine As the red sun sinks in the sky We can drink beer in the old cafes Thinking in a light bright crazy kinda way Moved by the music I hear in my mind You can travel with her, you can travel blind I was in a high place making plans
I was falling love, with every stranger Talking up a storm in a beat up town Yeah I thought that I was, Leonard Cohen I thought that I was Leonard Cohen Let’s stay out late Until the birds and bees are awake We can drink beer in the old cafes Thinking in a light bright crazy kinda way Moved by the music I hear in my mind You can travel with her, you can travel blind I was in a high place making plans
I was falling love, with every stranger Talking up a storm in a beat up town Yeah I thought that I was, Leonard Cohen I was in a high place making plans

If you feel you must, lapse tonight Peel your darling’s trust, from your flight Dedication stole, the thrill of lust How I want this girl, tonight I must Then you’ll go crawling home Home back to her With thoughts of newness to Replace disgust You’ve got the whole thing planned You promise that It’s only reason which You can hold back You’ve got yourself convinced It’ll be alright Don’t overreact my dear It was not much It was everything Loose your touch Loose your thoughts of me Shake your clutch Of all the times we knew Of things like joy Because memory believes Before knowing remembers You don’t believe in that Because you don’t You say you will believe What I must To erase you in The fairest way You’ll swear that you Have re-leant love She’ll tell you that You’ve just learnt hope That’s not love you feel It’s only hope That’s not love you feel It’s only hope That’s not love you feel It’s only hope

Your winter coat Hangs in my room And fills the air with you Your sweet perfume I want you back I want us back to what we once called love We were in love I know you suffered I know you suffered Darling don’t be mad when I say I still love you I still love you I still love you Darling, like the first day I still love you Won't you have me You're my favourite girl
8.
It’s time to let your fancies fall I know you’ve not dreamt them all Your will is strong, heart stronger still You need not fret, to get your fill Picture life in ten years time When our angst and sin subside Should not we be chasing peace Not impulse no not fantasy Not impulse no not fantasy An ordinary simple life Sign me up, I’ll do my time Still logging in, catching and scrolling through What dream will now come mess with you What dream will now come mess with you What dream will now come mess with you
9.
My books lie unopened We’ve barely left a word unspoken Exploring the grounds Of this big old house Mother, don’t you worry I’m in good company There’s news from Szafarnia Today we rode out to the country I’m not so good Dominic thinks I should Stick to the paper and the ivory But my health ain’t so great Six cups of coffee each day And I long to see you But how I wish I could stay There’s a girl Called Konstancja She sings like a siren of titan But my heart must insist She won’t know I exist There’s holes in her favorite brown pullover sleeves But my health ain’t so great Six cups of coffee each day And I long to see you But how I wish I could stay

You took me to school On the bar of your bike Every morning We climbed Pen-y-ghent Heard the rain on our tent And birds singing And every time I’m joking I throw my head back And laugh like you did A playful big kid Who I’ve loved all my You sat by my bed When I was too scared Read the paper You knew what to say When life went astray Made it better And every time I’m laughing I throw my head back Just like my old man My darling sweet dad Who I’ve loved all my Don’t worry about us We’ll look after to mum Your little darling And every time we’re hurting We’ll take ourselves back To the way that you laughed Our kind gentle dad Who we’ll love for the rest of our lives

about

Joseph Lawrenson presents his debut album Songs for Film: a collection of song arrangements of classical pieces. The pieces are re-arranged with his personal aesthetic, which celebrates and blends contemporary song-writing with classical genres.

Like a modern day Jimmy Webb, or a Yorkshire Baccarach if you will, Lawrenson occupies the spot of band-leader with ease, conjuring up inspired arrangements that seem to call out for moving images and the hushed wonder of the cinema.

His debut long-player is an inspired collection of original works, ingenious re-imaginings and re-works (magpie-ing from the likes of Ólafur Arnalds, Simeon Walker), and fresh, contemporary arrangements of classical staples (Bach, Chopin, Tchaikovsky). It’s an album that defies categorisation, hovering wonderfully between a number of pigeon-holes, like the soundtrack to the greatest film never made.

Now a much in-demand composer for film & TV, Lawrenson learnt his craft on the road as a founding member of the critically acclaimed Leeds band Dancing Years, playing hundreds of shows across Europe, supporting the likes of George Ezra, Richard Hawley, and Benjamin Francis Leftwich. The band racked up millions of Spotify streams and had continued support from BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 1.
